Back to school season is a joyous one. Largely, it’s the joy of not having to entertain our kids 24/7. But this year it’s extra special because the world is slowly getting back to normal. Remote learning is no longer mandatory, protections against COVID are increasing, and with the help of a few policies to keep everyone safe, we’ll have a regular school year again. Here are a bunch of reasons that back to school season makes us happy.
We No Longer Have to Hear the Word ‘Bored’
How does a kid get bored in the age of tablet computers and streaming TV? We’re not sure, but something about late August really causes the complaining about boredom to kick into high gear.
The Return of After-School Sports
Even if our kid isn’t a superstar soccer player or the next NHL draft pick, we’d rather watch them play than the pros on TV. The games are fun, the community is engaged, and these are the memories we’ll cherish long after the kids have left the nest. Plus, you can’t get seats this good anywhere else.
New Friends
That first month of school is full of meeting new people and it’s easy to be excited about our kids having fun, interesting, and kind new people in their lives.
Selfie Sessions Are Postponed
To school hours anyway. We’re all for our teenagers living their best lives, but watching them spend three hours taking, sorting, deleting, editing, and eventually posting selfies is a little demoralizing. Good thing there’s little to no photographic evidence of our dubious youthful activities!
Teachers
We love teachers. Not every single one all the time, but we love teachers. We especially love how they can explain concepts like algebra and the Charlottetown Accord, leaving us off the hook. Plus, when they’re at their best, they can inspire our kids to be better versions of themselves.
Shopping for Back to School Supplies at Costco
We have a pretty long association with Costco and there’s nothing we love more than browsing the aisles for cool new back to school things. There’s always art supplies for our kindergartener. We get smart study stuff for our high schooler. University students can be kitted out with phones, computers, printers and study desks. And we can’t stop by without getting general stationary and organizational stuff for everyone. Including us. We’re always in favour of getting more organized.
The House Is Quiet
No longer do our halls ring with the sounds of YouTubers and TikTokers loudly yelling about internet drama. At least, not until the late afternoon.
It’s Exciting to See Them Grow
Back to school season makes kids take a few bigger steps towards growing up, and that’s always special to watch.
