Moving House? How to Set Up New Internet Services in Your New Home

So, you’re moving to a new place and want new internet services, either because you can’t transfer via your old ISP (internet service provider) or you just want new services. What do you do? Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting new internet services in your new home.

Step One: Find Out What’s Available

You’re going to have to make a list of all ISPs, go to their websites and type in your new address to confirm that they’re able to deliver internet to your new home. It’s an easy but tedious process. You can make it easier on yourself by asking your new neighbours, either in person or in a Facebook neighbourhood group, who they use.

Step Two: Call & Confirm

Once you have your list of potential ISPs, call each and confirm they can deliver to your new address. Sometimes websites can be overly optimistic in their assessments, and sometimes your neighbours can get an ISP that you can’t, for some technical reason. If you’re in a new build or new neighbourhood, be especially diligent about this. Call and confirm that an ISP can actually deliver to your new place.

Step Three: Test Speeds

Obviously, you can’t test your speed until you move in, but you can ask your neighbours. If they don’t know how to test their internet speeds, you can start being a good neighbour by showing them how. Plus, that way you’ll get the information you want and have a better idea of what ISP will offer you the best possible service.

Step Four: Start Wheeling & Dealing

If you’re considering more than one ISP, start calling and asking about deals, especially new-subscriber deals. See if you can bundle more services, such as TV or a home phone, into a potential plan. New home, new network, new you, right?

Step Five: Schedule Your Installation

Ideally, you want to give an ISP two weeks’ notice so there’s adequate lead time to schedule your installation.

Step Six: Test Your Speed (For Real This Time)

Once your new internet is installed, run some speed tests yourself. Make sure you optimize your network. Now is the time to ensure that your Wi-Fi reaches all corners of your new home. If not, you might want a mesh Wi-Fi system. And be sure to take advantage of all that your router settings have to offer. A new home is the perfect time to set up a new network just the way you want it, so take all the necessary steps to having the network you want.
