9 Hidden Features on Instagram

Are you an Instagram fanatic? Here are a few tips and tricks to make your Instagram experience even better.

Make a Close Friends List

Want to share a fun Instagram post, but not with all your followers? Teenage you might have made two Instagram accounts, one for close friends and one for the public. But 2023 you should just make a Close Friends list.

Go to your profile. Open the Menu button. Tap the Close Friends button. Now select the people you want on your close friends list. Be sure to tap the Done button to save your work.

Quick Share

Want to share something neat with your friends without the hassle of making a whole new post? Just Quick Share it. Select the post you want to Quick Share. Touch the post. Then, touch and hold the Send icon, which will pop up under the post. Then a pop-up will appear with the contacts you interact with the most. Touch the profile you wish to Quick Share the content with. Boom, content forwarded.

Add Music to Your Stories

You technically can’t add music directly to stories, but you can add a music sticker, and that’s nearly the same thing. When you’re creating a story, tap the Sticker button, then choose a music sticker. From here you can select the music you want. The songs are from Instagram’s library and start at the song’s chorus, but you can shift the slider around and find a different part if you want.

Use Vanish Mode

Vanish mode lets you send messages that disappear. The chats are gone as soon as you close the chat. To do this, just open the chat where you want to enable vanish mode and swipe up. Swipe down to turn it off. It’s that simple.

Change the Chat Theme

Want your Instagram experience to look more fun? Open up a chat. Touch the profile picture of the user in the chat, then touch the Theme option. From here you can look at a menu of different colours. You can customize every chat you have, if you so choose.

Find Your Spam Folder

You don’t actually see all your DMs on Instagram. Many go into the hidden folder if Instagram thinks they’re spam or offensive. But if you want to check that you’re not missing anything, go to the DM menu. Then touch Requests. Then Hidden Requests. Now you’re in your hidden requests folder. Most will be either spam or bot accounts, so be forewarned.

Manage Obnoxious Language

Are there certain words you don’t want in your comments? You can filter that content out. Just go to your profile, then open the menu. Tap Settings, then Privacy, then Hidden Words, then Manage Custom Words and Phrases. Here you can add words to a blocklist. Then go back to Hidden Words. Here, toggle on Hide Comments and Hide Message Requests. Now any incoming messages or comments with words from your Hidden Words list will be filtered.

Mute

Don’t want to hear someone? Open up their profile, then tap the drop-down button next to the word Following. In the drop-down menu, tap Mute.

When a person is muted, you won’t see their posts or stories, and you won’t receive notifications for messages. If you want to unmute them, do the same thing: go to their profile, touch the drop-down menu next to Following, then just unmute.

The No-Crop Upload

Instagram automatically crops pictures that are bigger than its biggest aspect ratio. But this doesn’t always look good, so upload without a crop.

When you upload an image, touch the Expand button, which is at the lower-left corner of your screen. When you tap the Expand button, your image will adjust in size to fit the 4:5 aspect ratio, but it won’t crop. There may be a black border around parts of your image if necessary.
