9 Best Travel Apps

Need a little help coordinating all the headaches that come with travel? Luckily, we have a few apps to help.

Wolfram Sun Exposure

Hitting the beach this summer? Just how long can you spend in the sun until you’re burned? Well, whether you’re on a beach on Lake Ontario or on a beach in Cancun, Wolfram Sun Exposure can help you there. You tell it your skin type and it tells you how long you can spend in the sun before you get burned. The app uses UV forecasts for where you are and will alter it’s prediction when you tell it what SPF you’re using.

LiveTrekker

LiveTrekker keeps a digital record of where you’ve been in an interactive map. It tracks your location as you go, noting speed and altitude, making it perfect for hikers and other outdoor adventurers. You can attach pictures, videos, and notes along the way, creating a multimedia record of where you’ve been, which you can then share.

Google Translate

Google’s popular web service has both iOS and Android apps, letting you use basic phrases on the go. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself using the app to order from a street vendor in Mexico or holding a slow conversation with gap year travellers in France.

Splittr

Geared towards travel, Splittr helps you fairly split up bills and expenses. You can enter expenses (and who paid for them) as you go, and the app takes care of working out who owes who what. It even integrates currency conversion.

Tripit

Having Tripit in your pocket is a bit like having your own personal travel concierge. It keeps track of your flights, hotel bookings, car rentals, and events, converting it all into a single itinerary. All you do is forward your emails from the hotel and whatnot to the app and it does the rest. You can also share your itinerary with other users, which is handy.

XE Currency

If you google a currency conversion the first result is likely to be from XE Currency. So it’s not a surprise that their app is the standard in currency converting apps, clocking in at over 20 million downloads. It has a lot of business-oriented features, but it’s handy for the casual traveller too, mainly in that it converts to every world currency. It also functions offline by using rates from when you last connected.

Citymapper

There’s no shortage of map apps out there, so what makes this one special? Citymapper offers complete travel integration. It tells you real-time departures for trains, subways, streetcars, ferries, and other public transit options and lets you know about any disruptions your trip might face, making it ideal for getting around places like New York or London. It also integrates Uber, car sharing, bike routes, and more. Citymapper is available in 30 cities worldwide.

BringFido

Need a pet-friendly hotel? Then BringFido is your friend. It’ll even help you find local dog parks.

Travel List

Coordinating the packing process can be a nightmare. That’s why Travel List exists. It lets you easily list and organize the things that you’re packing. It also gives you reminders for last-minute items, can be set up for a trip with multiple stops, and integrates a schedule. Enjoy your vacation!
