5 Best Apps for Organizing Your Time

This is the year you’re going to get super-organized, right? You’re going to clear your clutter, then pick up a few gadgets to make your life easier, and finally start managing your family’s time better. Don’t worry, we have a few app ideas that will help.

Time Tree

The app: Time Tree.
Platforms: Web, iOS, Android.
Cost: Free.

This app is ideal for families. Basically, it’s an easy way to manage multiple calendars at once. You can assign each family member their own calendar or arrange calendars by categories, such as Work, School, Soccer, etc. Display all your calendars at once or toggle them on and off. The app can show you updates as they happen, and there’s a chat space for discussing and confirming plans.

Rescue Time

The app: Rescue Time.
Platforms: Mac, PC, Andoid, Linux.
Cost: Free; upgrade to premium for $9/month.

Rescue time runs in the background of your computer or on your mobile device. It tracks the time you spend on applications. For example, it tracks the amount of time your web browser is open, along with how much time you spend reading the news, clicking around Facebook, and watching YouTube. It then gives you report on how much time you’re spending on all those different things. If you choose to pay nine bucks a month, you unlock features like limiting time on applications, goal setting, filters, unlimited report history, and more.

Remember the Milk

The app: Remember the Milk.
Platforms: Web, iOS, Android, Linux, Blackberry 10, Fire.
Cost: Free; upgrade to pro for $39.99/year.

Remember the Milk is a smart to-do list. What makes it smart? You can tag everything with due date, priority, and whether it should repeat. You then get reminders and notifications when necessary. All this syncs across platforms. You can attach files to your tasks, use a search wizard, and set up smart lists based on specific criteria. For example, you can set up a smart list of everything you’ve postponed three times already. Best of all, you can share your tasks with someone else.

Forest

The app: Forest.
Platforms: iOS, Android.
Cost: Free with in-app purchases.

Want to turn time management and goals into a game? With Forest, you plant a little virtual tree every time you want to focus on something, such as dinner with the family. The app sets a timer and you have to put down your phone and focus on the thing you need to do. If you close the app to do something else on your phone, your virtual tree dies. If you’re really serious, you can put down virtual money as a bet that you won’t lose focus. Lose the bet and the app developers will take your money and plant a real tree somewhere. Bonus tip: this app works pretty well for homework time.

Focus Booster

The app: Focus Booster.
Platforms: Web, iOS, Android.
Cost: $2.99/month.

This app is for people who want to get better at focusing. It’s based on the Pomodoro technique. Basically, you decide on a task, set your timer, work for twenty-five minutes straight, take a five-minute break, and then repeat. Once you’ve done this four times, you may take a thirty-minute break. Then you repeat the whole process. The app trains you to focus hard for those twenty-five minutes and keeps track of your progress.
