13 Movies Turning 25 This Year

Ready to relive 1997 in movies?

Men in Black

This was an absolute monster of a summer blockbuster, and it made us wish we had one of those mind-wiping pens . . . which the elementary school versions of us would have almost certainly used for evil.

Good Burger

If you grew up with All That, this Kenan and Kel sketch turned into a movie hits all the right notes.

Titanic

You might be forgiven for not realizing that this was a 1997 movie. Yes, Titanic released on December 19, 1997 . . . and then became the bestselling movie of all time, largely because it was sold out for like two months and ultimately stuck around for ten months during its initial run. Some cinemas had multiple screens playing Titanic every day. It’s hard to overstate just how big of an event this movie was.

Gattaca

Here’s a smart, scary, thoughtful sci-fi movie that has aged well and still has a prescient message for humanity.

Boogie Nights

Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Heather Graham, Nicole Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman . . . this cast was stacked! No wonder it won critical acclaim at TIFF. Yes, really!

Air Bud

We won’t forget the movie that started a renaissance of sports films featuring golden retrievers. Look, the ref checked, there’s no rule that says a dog can’t play basketball!

Face/Off

A great action film despite the many, many problems and glaring plot holes created by having two guys just switch faces. Making it a magical Freaky Friday thing would have made way more sense.

Hercules

Even though Hercules goes from zero to hero just like that, Meg is the best Disney princess of her era and Hades steals the show . . . when Danny DeVito’s satyr Phil isn’t stealing it first.

The Fifth Element

Grand in scope and goofy in tone, The Fifth Element was highly original in its time and has been imitated ever since.

Volcano & Dante’s Peak

One movie is about a volcano opening up in downtown LA and the other is about a dormant super volcano threatening a small town. Truly we’ll always remember the year there were two duelling volcano movies at the box office . . . and nothing else about them.

Donnie Brasco

One of the best mafia movies of the ’90s and it’s just as good as the memoir it’s based on.

Anastasia

Some people misremember this one as a Disney film, but it was actually one of the last films by Don Bluth (Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven). It’s also notable for having Hank Azaria as a wacky talking albino bat, Bartok.

Spice World

Ah, the obligatory movie at every middle school girl’s sleepover in 1997. We were honestly floored when we grew up and realized that some people don’t consider this a classic! Well, those people are wrong. Now we’re going to spend the next twenty minutes watching this behind the scenes featurette.
