5 Underrated Netflix Shows

You know about Stranger ThingsFuller House, and Orange Is the New Black. They’re some of the most popular shows on Netflix. You’ve either watched them or already decided against it.

However, Netflix has more than a hundred original TV shows. Seriously, look at this list. And many of them fly under the radar. So, if you need something new to binge, consider this your guide.

Atypical follows 18-year-old Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), who is on the autism spectrum. When he decides to start dating, his father, Doug (Michael Rapaport), is initially thrilled. However, the plan goes slightly awry when Doug finds out that Sam’s crush is Julia (Amy Okuda), Sam’s 26-year-old therapist. With the help of his family, Sam starts to navigate the social landscape of the dating world.

Last Chance U

This documentary series follows football players at East Mississippi Community College. Many of them have been demoted from Division 1 play because of academic or disciplinary issues. Playing at the junior level is their “last chance” to go straight, prove themselves, and return to Division 1 play. Many of the players are from underprivileged backgrounds and college football represents a real shot at education and a career.

The Ranch

Ashton Kutcher, Debra Winger, Elisha Cuthbert, and Sam Elliott are the dysfunctional Bennett family in this western-themed sitcom. Elliott is the family’s grizzled, moustachioed patriarch, while Kutcher is his flaky son who’s been chasing a pro-football dream but ends up back on the ranch. Meanwhile, Winger plays Elliott’s estranged wife who owns a bar and Cuthbert is Kutcher’s ex-girlfriend. Everyone’s a little rough around the edges but they really love each other. What more could you want from a sitcom?

Set in the late 70s, this crime drama follows FBI agents in the early days of criminal profiling and the use of psychology in solving crimes. Agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), with the help of psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), interview serial killers and hope to apply what they’ve learned to unsolved crimes. This is a must-watch for cop show lovers.

Cable Girls

If you need a new period drama in your life to take the place of The Crown and Downton Abbey, may we suggest Cable Girls? Set in 1928, a phone company in Madrid is hiring women to work switchboards, and this series follows four of them. The drama is pretty high (in the first episode, we see an accidental gunshot, corrupt police, a botched con-job, and more), but the main thrust of the story is the very different lives the four women aspire to and the obstacles society puts in their way. Watch it dubbed or in the original Spanish with English subtitles.
