The Systems Administrator is a key position in a high-demand/high availability enterprise-level environment. The Systems Administrator is a member of a team that is responsible for the server components across all corporate and customer facing infrastructure at Primus Canada, with a focus on LINUX OSes. The systems administrator is responsible for designing, implementing, securing, optimizing, and administering Primus Canada’s servers.

The Systems Administrator will have the opportunity to research new techniques and technologies; install, configure, test, and maintain servers and plan server upgrades and deployments. The incumbent of this position is also the day-to-day contact for coordinating routine maintenance activity, addressing server problems in a timely manner, as well as diagnosing and fixing the root causes with an eye towards automation.

What you will be doing?
    Server Maintenance Support:
  • •  Implementation, configuring, monitoring, securing and maintenance of the server environment and infrastructure consisting of physical and virtual servers in multiple datacenters
  • •  Responsible for configuring, testing, implementing, securing, troubleshooting, and maintaining server related software including database, DNS, backup, monitoring, web, and supporting infrastructure
  • •  Plan and co-ordinate server and application expansions and upgrades, deployments and conversions, with a focus on solutions that provide for automation and ease of administration
  • •  Perform regular security audits of servers and formulate and execute plans based on findings
  • •  Co-ordinate work with other teams and vendors
  • •  Good grasp of hardware, network, security, and documentation standards and processes
  • •  Keeping abreast of standards and new technology developments with an eye towards architecting and implementing innovative solutions
  • •  Deploying and maintaining back-end infrastructure such as load balancers, NAS, SAN, firewalls and networks
  • •  Ensuring all systems and services are monitored and backed up
  • •  Designing services that are fault tolerant and site resilient
  • •  Co-ordinating the replacement and maintenance of remote hardware with the Field Services team
  • •  Clearly communicating network requirements to the Network Services team
  • •  Plan the migration and de-provisioning of legacy platforms

  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • •  Document all changes, conversions, upgrades, expansions, and deployments
  • •  Track and report utilization statistics to ensure adequate capacity planning
  • •  Document legacy systems and bring them up to current standards

  • Design, Automation and Testing:
  • •  Maintain a test bed for Technical Services Department hardware and software testing
  • •  Lead new technology investigation and implementation
  • •  Spearhead the sun downing of legacy technologies and implement enterprise-level future-proof solutions

Here is what we’re looking for in a candidate:
  • •  Post-Secondary University or College education in Computer Science, UNIX, Networking, LAN/WAN Administration
  • •  RHCSA, RHCE, or LPI is an asset
  • •  3-7 years of experience in Server Administration
  • •  1 year in Network Administration
  • •  Good knowledge of RedHat or CentOS LINUX is a requirement
  • •  Good grasp of virtualization, storage, database and networking, backups
  • •  Good knowledge (including maintenance & troubleshooting) of LINUX
  • •  Good knowledge of servers including hardware installations and troubleshooting
  • •  Good knowledge of common UNIX/LINUX system software
  • •  Knowledge of Microsoft Technologies
  • •  Knowledge of Networking
  • •  Knowledge of backup methodologies
  • •  Knowledge of monitoring platforms.
  • •  Good knowledge of VMWare products
  • •  Knowledge of SAN and/or NAS fundamentals
  • •  Demonstrated experience in network analysis, troubleshooting
  • •  Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with managers, end-users and third parties
  • •  Strong written communications skills with the ability to interpret technical documents and create required documentation as required
