The Network Monitoring Specialist is primarily responsible for proactive Event Management of Primus Telecommunications voice and data services. Roles include the maintenance, trouble shooting, functionality, reliability, training/documentation, and expansion of the integrated network-monitoring suite of performance monitoring tools. The Network Monitoring Specialist is required to collect, correlate, report faults, identify events and trends, evaluate and correct service performance monitoring issues. This position is also responsible for service monitoring statistical analysis and reporting.

Responsibilities:
Event Management
 
  • • Determine the appropriate control action for all Primus Voice and Data Services service events and ensure these are communicated to the appropriate functions (Teams).
  • • Ensure alerts contain all necessary information to determine the appropriate action.
  • • Identify, evaluate, and resolve monitoring performance problems.
  • • Perform and establish routine monitoring of Services and ensure the service monitoring environment is functioning properly.
  • • Serve as an escalation point for various integrated and specific Network Monitoring Systems.
Reporting
 
  • • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly monitoring statistics reports, as necessary, for Management. Identifies trends and reports any discrepancies to Manager.
  • • Perform weekly audits of NOC alarm handling and complete weekly monitoring ‘scorecard’.
Training
 
  • • Document and train Operations staff on NMS toolsets and ensure effective utilization of the tools, within the NOC and other Teams, for monitoring and management of the network. Assist with training material and tools. 
  • • Provide technical guidance, training, documentation, and mentoring to junior NOC Team members.
Development
 
  • • Implement, maintain, and expand various performance monitoring management system toolsets to support fault detection, information correlation, performance metrics, and reporting to support SLA's.
  • • Install, maintain, and repair monitoring management system applications and requirements, to test the availability and response times of network and customer equipment.
  • • Configure, evaluate, and maintain service level monitoring schema.

Qualifications:
  • • Post Secondary College education (Certificate/Diploma) in Networking, Telecommunications and/or equivalent.
  • • 2 years Spectrum and eHealth experience (CA certifications for eHealth or Spectrum administration a definite asset).
  • • 3 years of Systems Administration or Analysis Experience (Unix/Linux).
  • • Experience and in depth knowledge of the SNMP protocol and associated technology
  • • Experience with other monitoring platforms such as Nagios a definite asset.
  • • Possess a strong working knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to network management, security, maintenance and utilization.
  • • Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, ATM, MPLS, IP Telephony and Voice Switching.
  • • NOC experience is an asset.
  • • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to create and maintain NMS related documentation, and use these skills to train staff effectively.
  • • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to respond to customer clients and vendors via telephone as well as email in a professional and efficient manner.
  • • Ability to create and interpret technical documents and reports.
  • • Good problem solving and decision making skills.
  • • Ability to multitask under pressure in a team environment
